Hard Disk data trasfer problems

Hi all

My uncles laptop died off the other day and i am trying to recover the data from his hard drive which was his operating system drive (WIN XP). So i got his hard disk out and used a SATA to USB cable to try and access the drive. However that didn't work as it is asking me to format the drive first which i don't want to do.(using vista)

Is there a way out of this, any software i can download etc? Please let me know.

have you tried initialising the drive through disk management ?

I plug this as much as I can, see why by using my nick and its name as a keyword in SEARCH.

It saved my butt when a Mobo fried and made the HDD appear as RAW (out box new), no file System, nothing.
