First of all see if your motherboard supports SMART in the BIOS. If it does enable it, and this should alert you to any signs of impending failure.
Other than that most drive manufacturers have there own diagnostic utility available from their website.
You could also download Ultimate boot disk which has most of them already, plus a few from 3rd party companies.
