Just booted up my pc, playing around then it locks up - reboot, locks up again, reboot and i got some message about data could not of been daved on disk 4 etc...

Go to my computer and the disk is GONE :(

It was a pretty important disk.. like all family photos - can i get this back?

Why is it so common that 'aftermarket' HDD's fail and 'OEM - buy pc from shop' does not.
Haven't had any problems with my ADVENT 3217 computer for the last 6 years?

Not really true, my HDD is 3 years old, running solidly, all day everyday pretty much, no problems.

There is no difference between a drive bought in a PC and an OEM drive. They are the same drive its just one of them is included in a pre-built system.

Its luck if you get a good drive that lasts 6 years, some just die prematurely, can be influenced by cooling, power levels, how brutally you run the drive etc

i've got a feeling an old samsung hard drive of mine has just failed which is annoying but had my stuff backed up. Am now in the 'need new hdd' market

I've had a DELL drive go.

Took our photos with it.

I really should learn from my mistake and make a backups of this one lol.

Does your Advent use a 5400rpm disk, older 5400rpm disks run a lot cooler than early 7200rpm drives. Even more recent 7200rpm drives still need reasonable airflow to keep cool. Overheated drives are more prone to failer.

The only differences between retail drives and oem, is retails generally have a longer warrenty, and oem sometimes have their drives "configured" in silent mode, while retails normally default to "performance" mode.

what drive was it? my maxtor dm9's act up badly if they get cooler than around 25-26c

also like others said, it makes no difference if its oem or retail. its just luck of the draw. my 3 maxtors 80gb dm9's are 7 years old now and they have been used constantly in raid 0 for the first 6 years and individually for the last year, 1 has just started to get the click of death so i got a new 500gb samsung F1 4 days ago and its faulty already with some s.m.a.r.t error.

Yea my HDD just dropped again.. rebooted - the bios finds it, get into windows and its back..

But i get some error about not being able to access csrss.exe - or somthing lol :(

You probably know this, but back the whole thing up straight away. If it's disappeared a couple of times then it's probably going to die for good fairly soon.

i don't know about that. its probably just dodgy cheap drives that fail quickly. i've got a 160GB seagate Barraccuda thats been in near constant use for 5 years and it still shows as all systems green on S.M.A.R.T scans :)

on the other hand, i've seen 2-month old maxtors go up in puffs of smoke...
