Having anti virus problems on my folks PC. Real time protection is not working and I've been through all their support suggestions, twice! It still does it!

After a reinstall, it worked fine including a full scan and no virus found. The real time protection was even showing as working.

After a reboot, the real time protection switched off again.

I'm wondering if the HDD is on it's way out? I've left it defragging wondering if that would help (it's in a bit of a state).

Any thoughts please?

Are you hearing any noises from it?

Go to the manufacture of your hdd website, do a search for diagnostic tools. Check it for errors, and read the SMART info.

What AV are you using? TBH I don't think it is your hard drive, but do what I said above to rule it out.

To rule out HD do as above. Also for S.M.A.R.T. info, you can use SpeedFan (see here).

I also suspect a bug - virus, malware, etc. Is the AV up-to-date? Is that all you/they use, i.e. no Anti-Spyware/Malware software installed?

Recommend you run a HijackThis! analysis (here) of the system

Cheers guys. I'll give it a go before I get too involved doing a reinstall.

It's CA antivirus for info and adaware hasn't picked up any problems.
