Just looking for an explanation for why a computer would randomly restart if the hard drive was failing :)

Saw it in here and just wondered why it would happen.

Reason I was looking was because we have about 50 computers which randomly restart, turn off, go dead and a gzillion other really irritating intermittent faults :(

If the system is set to restart on a crash that would prob cover it, PATA/SATA hdd's fall under a category called IDE which basically means the drive controller is on the drive itself in a circuit board and the motherboard has a host adaptor that lets it "talk" to the system (over the cable), if the drive controller on the drive dies/fails it can flood the system with garbage and cause lock-ups or total system crashes just as a faulty CPU/ram stick/etc could. (not the exact way it happens but you get the idea)
