First off, a massive thank you to you guys (and OCUK) who helped me build my new computer recently. I couldn't have done it without the help of this forum :)

However, my OLD computer (vintage 2004) recently had serious hard drive problems and I'm looking to replace the drive with a new, more reliable one for a fresh install of Windows XP.

Not really being familiar with old hard drives, have you guys got any suggestions / pointers when choosing a drive suitable for the build? I'm looking to order tonight, or maybe tomorrow, cause it's kinda urgent.

The spec:
  • Mobo: Gigabyte GA-7N400E
  • Current Hard Drive: "120Gb 8Mb Cache" (and that's all it says on the spec, I didn't build this one)

So, if someone could provide a link or model number of a replacement that would be awesome. (Looking for roughly the same capacity)

You need a IDE hard drive

Very hard to get hold of these days... but a Google search will find at least one.

more commonly sold on auction sites.... buyer beware :)

Might be more cost-effective to get the cheapest new SATA drive you can find, together with a cheap PCI SATA controller card - you'll be limited by the speed of the PCI bus, but unlikely to be a significant factor on such an old system.

CaptainCrash; I did consider this, but looking around there seems to be endless issues with drivers etc. and many have reported that, with some BIOSs, you cannot use this method for a boot drive

Essexraptor; not allowed to link here; but Google "Generic Hard Disk Drive 160GB IDE" - something like that?

buyer beware :)

It's not worth risking your eHarbour rating over a £15 (ie £10 after postage and auction tax) drive. There is not much scam risk on buying this sort of 2nd hand item from auction beyond the usual 2nd hand lifespan issues, damage/loss during transit wasting your time, and the user's own expertise in buying the correct item in the first place.
