Just been trying to sort out a laptop. Basically it kept locking up in windows andactignvery slowly.

I thought I would just whipe it and re-install windows. I deleted the NTFS partition and started formatting a new one. Its been anout 5 hours and it had done 17% so I rebooted and this time formatted it with quick mode in xp setup which seem'd to work although now it says it can't copy a file from the cd although Imsure the cd is fine.

Sounds like it is b0rked. Got another drive you can test that disc on? Even though you would think it to be the CD it could just as well be the HDD as writting to the drive is unsuccessful. The way its worded and first instincts make you think its the CD.

How old's that mate? I had an IBM deskstar go boom on me over a year ago. Basically IBM sold their deskstar to Hitachi, and so I personally wouldn't touch Hitachi drives.

From the label it looks like it was made in September 2002 so not too bad goign I guess. I remember the IBM Hitachi thing, I had an IBM drive once which I had to RMA three times and every one of them died within a year. In the end I just gave up and bought a different brand.
