Hard Drive IDE cable question

Simple quick question... if i was to connect an IDE DVDRW drive and a HDD to the same IDE cable would they both work ok?

As loads of IDE cables have slave and master connectors on them, but i've only ever connected two DVDRW's to these and not a HDD + DVDRW.

It'll work fine. The slave/master labelling is for use with devices which are set to cable select however there's nothing wrong with physically setting the device mode on the device itself and using whichever connector is appropriate to the case layout.
