Hi there,

Im kicking an idea around at the moment... I currently have a SATAII 320Gb drive, and a 120Gb ATA-100 drive. Both are storage drives. The files are massing on my system, as files do, and im looking to get rid of the 120Gb and get another 320Gb. Unfortunately, i only have 2 SATA ports on my motherboard (serves me right for getting a cheap 754...) and my C: drive also runs from SATA.

Would getting a 2-port SATA RAID card for about £15 be a good idea, even though i dont intend to use RAID? I dont want to spend too much, so a new mobo is out of the question, and im not bothered about it being SATAII compatible. Would this work, and would the PCI limit the data rate, or will it not be a problem?

Or would it just be simpler (is that a word?) to just get a 320Gb ATA-100 drive?

Thanks for the help.

(P.S if this does work, ill be selling a 120Gb ATA-100 Hard drive in MM!! :P)
This is not an offer.......

If it is only used as a storage drive mainly then the PCI bus probably won't be a hugely limiting factor for you, the card will offer you the SATA port without using Raid functionality so that isn't an issue. I'd just get the card and accept that it may not be as fast as the drive running off the motherboard but it will still be fast enough for most uses.

Oh and simpler is a word :)

Awesome. I knew i went to that schol thing for a reson.....

...

I've had some second thoughts as well, and as im really low on money, i might be going for a ATA-100 320Gb from Western Digital. Its affordable, and its a storage drive, so i wont need bleeding edge speed. But thanks for clearing that up mate.
