hard drive issue

hi there

a mates machine wasnt turned of properly, now it wont start up,

for example into safe mode, 5 seconds it dies

into recovery console, 5 seconds it dies

last known good configuration 5 seconds it dies

any ideas

Try a repair install.

Can you define "it dies" a wee bit better please.

nothing to do with your harddrive it looks. your OS is muffed... as the guy above said, do a repair install otherwise format it and reinstall

so chckdisk /r is what were going for yeah ?

No. Put XP CD into the CD/DVD drive, and startup from that. Be sure to press any key, so you boot from CD.

A couple of steps later, you'll be asked if you want to repair XP.
