Argh its driving me nuts what the hell is it doing its like its doing something when it should be idle?

i closed down aload of processors running in the background and it just ticks?

I am running vista 64bit ultimate.

Is the ticking the same sound the drive makes when it's usually in use or is it more pronounced? Try running your hard drive manufacturers diagnostics utility and see if that finds anything. To me it sounds like a failing drive, get a backup of your data quick and buy a new drive

indexing?

leave indexing and superfetch on, they give you better performance. especially superfetch

I had this recently after installing the Vidalia tor bundle.
It turned out to be that program making it tick - uninstalled and click went away!
