Hi all, I just bought a WD black 1tb. It gets detected in the bios, but when its loaded up vista tries to install drivers but it says access is denied. I am using an asus p5k premium running vista 64bit. The drive is under other devices of the device managaer but is not in disk management.

Yep have tried that it didnt appear. I previously had 1 main/system drive and 1 storage driver that worked fine. When I wanted to add the 2nd storage drive it would make my 1st storage drive disappear to. When the 1st storage drive is unplugged the 2nd storage drive still wont appear in Disk Management only in other devices in device manager

The drive is appearing under "other devices" rather than "disk drives"??

Can you give me a bit more info about the system - mobo model, drive models, how they're connected etc.

yes they are appearing as other devices rather than disk drives. The mobo is Asus P5K Premium, the hard drives are main/system drive WD6400AAKS, 1st storage WD5000AAKS and 2nd storage WD1001FALS. They are all connected internally via sata cables

What mode is the SATA controller set to in the BIOS (IDE/AHCI/RAID)?

Which SATA port is each drive connected to - despite it not mattering in the SATA spec Asus have somehow managed to wire up the ports so that the black ones aren't bootable but the red ones are.

Sata controller is set to IDE. System drive red port 1,storage drive 1 black port 4 and 2nd storage red port 5

Hmm, that sounds like a sensible arrangement. Not sure why it wouldn't work.

The mention of problems loading drivers in the top post suggests something isn't right somewhere. Have you got any yellow exclaimation marks in Device Manager?

well just the hard drive in other devices. It says
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
Access is denied.
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

There seem to be a lot of reports of Code 28 driver problems but mainly with video cards and USB devices, I can't see anything about HDDs...

Have you tried the usual suspects - different SATA cables and ports?

Yep have tried that, when I do that it asks me to install drivers and when I try to install them it comes up with the access is denied
