Hard drive on way out? Or Mobo problem?

Hi,

I have two Western Digital HDDs. A 160GB and a 80GB. These are Sata 2.
These are running off an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe.

Now I was running off ports one (160GB C:\) and two (80GB) but when booting one day I got comfronted by "BOOT ERROR INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER".

My 80Gb was reconised but the 160Gb wasn't. After many restarts and swaping leads back and forth etc... they then worked again till it happened a while after (weeks/ months) and I then ran off Sata ports two and three. This then ran fine untill today.

Now after swapping cables about again and making sure they were all plugged in to which they were its not booted again and both drives are working.

It only seems to happen to the 160Gb. Is this on its way out? It's only a year and a few months old.

Is it likely to be the boot disc or does it sound like connection problems? I don't move any wires between it working and then one day going wrong.
Its located (like to the 80Gb) in front of the 120mm intake. Could dust be a problem?

Anyway who thinks I should by a new hard drive then?

Timmins.

Well I've already had a new disc lead.

And yeah it does seem to be. Faster but at the same time lacking the quality.

So now I'm thinking of using it as a backup drive buut I don't particualy want a dodgy back up drive so I can see it in the bin before long.

You could try the S.M.A.R.T diagnostics tab in Speedfan to tell you the general fitness of the drive. I think it will work with sata drives, though not if its set up as a raid. I used that when the S.M.A.R.T report at bootup suddenly told me one day that my main 120gig boot drive was "faulty and should be replaced". Cue much frantic backing up. Speedfan gives it a 51% fitness rating. Basically its shagged. Western Digital drive as well, had it about 3 years.

I get this when using the motherboard in sig with a SATAII drive, sometimes the BIOS detects it, other times it won't so it's useless as a boot drive, at the moment it's used as storage and is detected everytime once I boot into XP so I know it's not the drive that's the problem, probably this cheap MoBo even thought it's running the latest BIOS e.t.c

I'm installing speedfan now. Thanks for the surgestion.

Do WD hard drives have a warrenty or anything I could maybe tap into.

You could try some new sata leads first as this maybe the problem not the disk drive.
Sounds strange but I'd also recommend trying that. Thought my Maxtor was on its way out, so switched cables with a WD in my system. Then the WD started acting-up, even as far as 'Disk/Drive Corrupted' (or something) & won't boot message  Replaced suspect cable with a new one. & now all is well (been now, a problem free 48-hours) :)
