Vista crahsed on me, like full blown dead. So i installed xp on a 6gb (max i could have) partition, which left lots of the useful information i had safe and useable on the other partition of the hard drive, but can i install programs on the other partition ( of the same hard drive) ? ..

Yes, you can. just point the installer at d:\programs rather than c:\programs

If you want to resize the partions boot from a gparted livecd and away you go. Don't interrupt it partway through unless you have backups, it may well take overnight if the partiton is a big one

ahh thanks very much... I might resize the partitions sometime in the future, but not at the mo... Gotta get round to cleaning up all the redundant programs that were installed on vista now...

Can anyone tell me if i can extend the existing partion that XP is in.. It only has 6gb and as you can imagine lots of programs have treid to put stuff in there and crammed it up. So can i somehow merge the other partition with the OS one, or just have no partitions, without having to re-install everything on the OS partition?..

Yes to do this you would just need to select a "custom" or "advanced" install of your app as opposed to a "typical" install and then it will let you select where you want to install it to.
