Hard Drive Problem

Hiya,

Basically had a problem with one of my hard-drives tonight it somehow turned itself to Read-Only after a system reboot. I was still able to view all the files, just unable to delete, move, copy, cut or install anything on that drive.

I managed to use a file recovery system to get my files off onto another hard drive, tried to format but no luck, managed to format it via the Windows Setup and delete the partition.

It is now showing as this and i can't assign it a drive letter and really lost at what i can do next to get it back up and running.

If you could help it would be very appreciated.

I can't do that at all, it won't give any option to format it. I know you can do that and have done it in the past, hence the post as im all out of ideas.

It is showing up, i just can't do anything with it.

I can't even create a simple volume to make a drive.

I've tried everything, just can't get it working. Spent maybe the last 4 or so hours looking at it but to no avail.

I tried google and got something similar although it didn't work, this one had a different way of going around it. So yeah regardless, thanks mate was a big hoorah when it worked!

It's working now without any problems, i thought i'd check the health status of the drive and it's chucking up a few errors.

Is this a sign of the drive dying? I am not sure, what to do, either keep using it until it goes or buy a new one as it's out of warranty. If there is a way of fixing it i'll try, but if not then there is nothing i can do other than to replace it.

Yeah i've just done that;

It passed all but one of the simple tests, it failed on the Short DST and came up with this error.

"Unfortunately, your Seagate product has failed an important diagnostic test, possibly caused by problem sectors which are difficult to read. Seagate recommends that you run SeaTools for DOS, which has the ability to repair most problem sectors"

I haven't done the Advanced as it states it needs to format the drive, so i'll do that once i've copied my files onto another drive.

I will then try the SeaTools for DOS and see if that can fix the problem areas if not then i guess i'll need to replace or just use it as a backup drive, as i don't want to use it for the data i normally use on it as it's normally 600gig with all my games.

Yeah did that, it went through the whole bar and said any errors it could fix were fixed.

It is still showing up with errors from the Seagate/Samsung tool and the HDTune as shown above.

So it did fix some, just not all of them.

Edit; Just failed on another aswell. Long Generic - FAIL

Yup... Long Generic fail is bad news. I RMA'd one off the back of that result about 4 weeks back :(

Time to back up and replace the HDD :)

Well just found out it was in warranty, so getting it RMA'd.

I thought it was 2 years, not 3 so that was a suprise.

Cheers for all the help guys.
