Well as I said in an earlier post I went to the local computer fair and they had bugger all decent in hard drives... So im back to square one..

Im now going to go to O/C this week and definetly getting me a hard drive from there instead..

The 2 I am looking at are

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...t F1 750GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD753LJ)
Not in stock but they having delivery this week

or

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp... 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST3500320AS)

Which would be the best out of the 2 of these?? not for storage use only for O/S and gaming.

Thanks again guys for any information you can provide.

I have a lot of the samsung F1 750GB drives and they quick and quiet. The 320, 640 and 1TB versions are faster as they have greater data density. I haven't tried the seagate drives, but I suspect that they are also 250GB platters.

So what you saying is the Samsung F1 320 gig hard drive with 16mb cache is quicker than the Samsung F1 750 gig hard drive with 32mb cache??

Which would be better for the operating system and gaming???

Thanks

Yes the 320 is faster than the 750... this is because of different platter sizes and density.

Right so can anyone honestly tell me what they would reccommend for my main C:\ drive.

Operating System (Vista) and a couple of games??

I do believe that the ones below are all either single or double 320 gig platters

Size isnt an issue so ive narrowed it down to the four below

Either

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...t F1 320GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD322HJ)

or

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...t F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD642JJ)

or

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...k 640GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD6401AALS)

or finally

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...ue 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD6400AAKS)

Im going to OCUK first thing Saturday morning so any quick responses would be greatly appreciated..

Look forward to hearing from you guys

Thanks

Regarding the Samsungs, the 320 and 640 have equal performance... so it comes down to how much capacity you want.

The Caviar Black is marginally faster than the F1 in real terms, though synthetic throughout is slower. This is also more expensive than the F1.

The Caviar Blue is a lower spec model to the Black... personally, I wouldn't bother with it.

If you are happy to pay a bit more, the Caviar Black is the best performer. If it helps, after much debating over the F1 vs the Black, I think that I'm about to get the 1TB model, which is on offer this week (though I would not get it at it's normal price).

The F1 is also a very good drive and will save you a few £££.

To be fair, you would be hard pushed to notice the difference between these two... that said, the HDD is typically the slowest component in the system, so if money is less of an issue then get the WD Caviar Black.

As i said in the other thread the samsung 640gb - its fast quiet and should you ever need the warranty its uk based.

Changed my mind :D

Ive found a local competitor that does the Samsung 320 gig for a really good price..

Once again thanks again for the prompt responses

Well it snot been my week this week...

I got the Samsung 320 gig back home plugged it all in and it was DOA

I was well P**sed off..

Took it back and paid the extra and had the 640 gig

Its now running like a trooper and its very fast and quiet.

Would just like to say thanks for all the responses, it helped a lot

Thanks all
