Hi there, I wanted to transfer a lot of data between 2 computers so i just removed my second hard drive and took it to my friends computer, connected it up, transfered the date over then took it back to mine.

Now it suddenly says "You need to format this drive before you can use it"

I got 700gb of data on this drive that I dont want to lose.

Does anybody know what is causing this and what I can do to solve it

Thanks
Chris

A quik Edit, Its now only displaying the Size as 40mb

I seen that post but I got no where to recover 700gb to.

I was just wondering if there was anyway to save the data but keep it on the drive rather than lose it when it wants me to format.

Also Windows is now reporting the Hard drive size as 40mb

You cannot recover with any good App to the same source as your recovering from (pointless incase its buggered)

If it was here I would probably work out a way to do it but I cannot address it from here, sorry.

Buy an External HDD A.S.A.P, then recover it and from now on keep a back up.

Ok, How do i get Windows to see the full TB drive rather than just 32mb, It only see's it as 32mb in Disk Managment also.

what OS was this HDD formated in?

if its vista then it could be GPT, in which case XP ect cant read the drive. does it not work on your original PC?

I have just re read your original post so it seems that isnt the case.

can you see the data using a recovery tool?
you might have corrupted a sector when you were moving the disc

run testdisk on it to see if it see's the old partition.. can restore them to the same drive in a second

I run testdisk on it and it can only see the current 32mb NTFS partition and the data recovery tool cant see any old data on the drive.

It sounds fine, Partition magic cant see the rest of data either, I download the Samsung test utility, I boot from the cd and I just get error messages, Do you think I should just RMA the drive as its just over a month old.

Update:

I sent the drive off RMA style yesterday at 3pm and I received an Email today saying they they have send me a replacement and should be with me within one week.

Good fast support from Samsung, Well it wasent Samsung, It was a third party company based in England called Rexo Limited.
