So i brought the HDD listed below, but i have few problems with it.

The drive works if its plugged into my laptop but if i plug it in my desktop it is detected but does not show in computer manager but is displayed under devices and printers.

Troubleshooting --

I have tried all USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports and it is the same apart from one where i get a quick flash in "my computer" and i get a pop up telling me to format disk, but when clicking on it the disk has disappeared.

Drive has been reformatted couple of times on the laptop to make sure its blank and nothing on it to effect it.

Drivers has been uninstalled, re-installed, checked for updates, checked and the all display "this driver is working properly".

I have google'd this problem but everything i look at says its drive lettering in computer management but my drive doesn't show up so how can i assign a letter?!?

TL;DR Drive works on laptop but not on desktop, drivers uninstalled and re-installed... help !

I had something like this with a flash drive.

I reformatted it then it worked on all devices.

Try reformatting and then placing some items on so its not empty still nothing :(

have you tried a different cable just to be sure

I don't own other USB 3.0 devices i shall ask around my neighbors but that will be a slim chance as well :(

I just noticed that the drive is USB powered it is possible that your mobo usb port does not have enough power to supply the drive.

2 things to try.

Use a powered USB hub and plug your drive there.

Use Gigabytes 3XUSB Power. I dont have a Gigabyte board so the only thing that I can tell you I have taken from Gigabytes site.

Your mobo is supposed to have a USB header with a RED marking on it and you need to plug your front panel USB port on this thing and use this port, you also need to install a driver according to Gigabyte.

more details here from Gigabyte site http://uk.gigabyte.com/MicroSite/185/on-off-charge.htm .

If it still does not work try updating your BIOS.

Many thanks to you AtaRo, combination of BIOS update and USB driver update although windows said it was up-to-date, there was one.

Problem sorted :D
