Hard drives not recognized :(

Ive been looking a computer for a friend who has an older AMD XP Machine. theres 2 sata Hard drives, one of which I believe has failed (the dreaded click of death etc) but the other I think is working.

I have slotted both hard drives into my computer, but it doesn't recognize them, either in the BIOS or in disk management.

any ideas please folks?

If it's not picked them up in BIOS then it's not looking hopeful. Have you tried different sata/power cables or even a different machine?

Im not too fussed about the one thats failed, its the one that was ok in XP that I can get my computer to recognize in the WIndows 7. I just wanted to go into disk management and retrieve what was on there, then do a complete fresh install of XP on that. Saving my friend from buying a HD.

Im really baffled that my computer wont recognize it, tempted to just try hirens boot cd on mini xp mode and see if I can see it then, any more suggestions?
