I'm currently commuting 7 mile along a mixture of tarmac, footpath and road on a Cube Analog 27.5".

Can anyone recommend some tyres that will get me going a bit quicker. Probably doesn’t help that there’s 15 clem sitting on the back wheel, but any help would be appreciated.

Recently put a Conti RaceKing 2.2 Protection on the rear of my bike after looking at the above site. One of the fastest, and also has very good puncture protection. Did have an S-Works Fast Trak before that which was a bit slower and punctured constantly.

What pressures are you running at the minute? Might be able to run them higher.

Thanks chaps. I will have a look at tyre pressure.

One of the lads at work suggested clip in pedals would be more of a benefit in terms of getting about quicker.

i recently changed mine to 27.5 x 1.5in Schwalbe G-One Allround. obviously i lost a lot of offroad capability, but my route doesnt involve much offroading. not cheap tho, but it does let me run tubeless.

Thanks for the replies.

Been looking at hybrids/cyclocross bikes now :rolleyes: there seems to be quite a few people using road bikes on the route, but never having used drop bars before I’m reluctant to dive in for a full on road bike.

I could see myself getting on with a cx bike though and think that would be a good fit for the path and road combo.

you can buy a cheap-ish drop handle bar for now. a lot of discount deals at the moment. for 20-30 quid, you can get a Deda alloy drop bar (Italian brand taiwanese made). the flat section can still have the MTB brakes/shifters but much closer to center. the geometry will be abit weird, but should give you a good taster.

If you can lock out your suspension you're probably fine for now. Clipless pedals don't really make you any faster, they're just a little more convenient and can help if you have issues like knee pain. Just had a quick look but something like this could be decent if you want new tyres;

Cyclocross bikes can be great but there aren't many below £500 or so.

Cheers Perma. Am I right in thinking I can use my current tubes on those?

Current tyre is the Schwalbe Smart Sam. Which look to be either 2.1" or 2.25".

My legs must be adjusting, smashed a few PB's this morning on my way in. Now that wind has buggered off!

Can anyone recommend any pannier sets for a MTB commuter? I'm even wondering if a handle bar bag would be enough. Only really to put work gear in. Smart pants/shirt/polo.

I was using the 29er version in the summer, they were great fun on and off-road and surprisingly quick for a "balloon" tyre. I recently swapped back to my 38mm Marathon Cross pair, thinking they might be better for the winter, but I'm getting very tempted to revert back to the 2.35" G-Ones for the bigger contact patch (partly because I was getting some rear wheel slip up Dell Rd's ~20% gradient section yesterday afternoon, most times grip recovered while I still had momentum, but one time I had to put my feet down and then get going again by riding across the road).
