I just upgraded my dad's pc running his old Maxtor IDE harddisk 30GB.

This harddisk (slave) is attached to a single IDE cable with a DVD-ROM (master), because the new board only has 1 IDE slot. It ran fine for 1 night and since this afternoon, the PC is doing random restart on it's own every once in awhile. Upon rebooting, it'll just give me a system disk missing warning when attempting to loadup Windows and the MAXTOR disk would be missing from the bios, showing only the DVD-ROM as master.

I have checked the cable and they were all attched firmly. Another restart seems to have the harddisk reappearing in the bios.

The PSU seems to be running fine on all other components so I am assuming it is the harddisk that's giving the problem. It is a very old drive. Also what I have noticed is that the system seems to be restarting when the Harddisk is under heavy use.

Would be great if anyone can shed some light.

it is more than likely a hdd failure but I would replace the ribbon cable and see if it still does it - had similar fault which turned out to be a very small break in the ribbon cable.
