I have a seagate 80gb ata hard drive and I’ve had it for about a year or more but recently its been giving me random beeps and they're becoming more and more frequent, the only problem I seem to have at the moment is when I run scan disk my computer freezes and I have to reboot.

I'd like to figure out whats going on and fix it without having to format and lose data

Any ideas?

Before anything else, run SeaTools

It could be just the heat, which is making your drive re-callibrate itself more frequently. Quite a few drives re-callibrate themselves when they detect a sharp change in temperature. This is to keep the heads properly aligned, when the metal may change shape slightly because of the heat.

Run SeaTools to make sure, though.
