i have an ide maxtor which i use for booting, it runs windows xp, and now it went literally up in flames... and my pc wont boot luckily i have all music anf films on a seperate hdd, my storage drive. no chance of warranty on this? even though it says life time warranty?

Had something similar happen to me, though I didn't bother with the warranty.

Turned out it was the power supply, which then took a further 2 graphics cards and another hard disk.... just saying.
 
A standard failure outside of warranty you have to eat the loss. However a spectacular and dangerous failure even outside warranty, one that could have easily caused serious damage to you and yours, is going to be replaced.

Contact Maxtor with documentation of this failure... even a sniff of bad PR like this should see you with a shiny new Maxtor and a letter of apology.
