My trusty 37 gig raptor 8meg cache is making noises that sound like a electric saw cutting through metal, so i assume its on its way out.

I won't buy another raptor due to price compared to normal sata2 drives, ive been looking at the Western Digital Caviar RE 320GB 3200YS SATA-II 16MB Cache now am i likely to notice the drop in performance with this drive compared to my raptor.

The 37Gb Raptors aren't the quickest drives out there any more in terms of sustained transfer rates. They still deliver class leading seek times but the higher data density of the latest generation of 7200rpm drives means that they have the edge in sustained transfers.

I'd pass on the WD drive though, the Seagate 7200.10s are the quickest 7200rpm drives available at the moment.
