Probably been covered lots, but I'm looking to replace my 2002 Marin Pine Mountain. I plan to get something on the C2C or Evans ride to work scheme.

Visits to the local leisure lakes store have resulted in different recomendations on every visit; Cube, specialized, Trek, Orange....

Equipment seems pretty standard across the models at this price range; XT/Deore mix or SRAM, hydraulic discs etc. Anyone have any definitive thoughts on what to go for or anything to avoid?

Cheers

Pauls Cycles offer through CycleScheme now, so there are some good potential deals on C2W. For instance, the Giant XTC 1:

SRAM / Shimano drivetrain - both are good, some people prefer SRAM, other's Shimano. The XTC 1 is an SLX/XT mix.

Hydraulic discs will be in your budget as well. Maybe worth a drive over to Paul's to try out an XTC.

Got the Boardman HT pro and can't fault it at all, yes its from Halfords but I have had no issues from my local one whatsoever, great looking bike and great kit on it, seriously good bang for buck.

boardman bikes are top notch i'm glad that halfrauds manage to get a deal with them.

I've heard that if you get a Boardman bike you're best off ordering it from the Halfords website as that way it'll be built by people who know what they're doing. Otherwise the in-store mechanic who builds it for you might do a botch job :)

Sadly the Whyte bikes are outside of my budget and don't think Halfords are part of the C2C scheme, but maybe wrong. Still swaying to the Cube and off to get a written quote tomorrow.

As said I have not had any issues with my local halfords bikehut place, whenever I go in there, I have seen the same guy for the past 4 years and he is very knowledgable and really enthusiastic, and when my bike comes back it always comes back as I ask!

It's probably just pot luck to be honest, but I have heard stories about some Halfords mechanics being rubbish. I guess not all of them are though :)

I'm also looking for a similar bike to the OP. I'd love to get the Cube LTD Race but it's just over the £1k limit for C2W bikes.

What are the best alternatives?

I had to sweet talk the chap in the shop to knock £39 off, he did but then said it'll be £39 to order the bike :p

Hopefully picking it up this week as still waiting for the voucher to arrive.

I’ve thought about doing this. The problem is my work has signed up to a **** scheme where the only supplier is Halfords. They can order any bike you want but they're not open to making "arrangements" for bikes over the threshold.

I might go through my girl friends scheme if I can't find an alternative. I've seen the 2009 Race for about £800 which under the scheme would cost about £550 which would be ideal.

I just got the Specialized Rockhopper SL Pro, it's an absolute Gem.

I also used to own an Xtc 4, which had the same frame just different tech from the Xtc 1, and loved that too.

The Specialized Rockhopper SL Pro is also above £1k so not purchasable via the C2W scheme.
