Whenever im playing a game, dosen't matter what one it freezes and i have to end process through task manager. I get a small exclamation mark in a yellow triangle appear in my system tray that i cannot click on and dissapears after about 5 seconds. I check my CPU temp and its about 68c, which is pretty high but should be expected (?) as im currently using a stock cooler (ruby orb is giving me grief) and maximum rated temp for an E8400 is 72c i think. My HD4850 reads a temp of 80c.

Do you think this is a heat issue? Or maybe down to power or something?

it could be something as simple as bad gpu drivers, uninstall them then use a driver removal tool to get rid of any left over, then reinstall the lastest drivers and give that a try i had this happen to me...plus check device manager for the symbol see if thats shpwing any hardware with a problem...:)

E8400 on stock speed at 68C-72C?
It is way too high even for stock cooler, change it, if you do not OC, you can get at about ~£20 good cpu cooler!

for HD4850 it is normal temp as this cards are hot, but use fan speed control to increase fan speed tho!

HD4850 is at 100% on stock cooler fans. 68c is my maximum under load, idle is 42c. im installing new drivers now, so i'll let you know how that goes.

Okay i re-installed my drivers and i thought it worked, played Grid for about an hour then got the same problem. It has something to do with my graphics card because i get a message now that reads 'ATI display driver is not responding' or something along those lines. This would make me feel it was a software issue but as i've just re-installed these drivers...

maybe my card isn't getting enough power, im confused now.

Your E8400 is idle at 68c, this may not be the problem but that is way too high! My E8600 is o/c at 4.5ghz atm and is idle at 40C and max temp around 72C on full load on air cooling. Buy an after market cooler and new paste is my advice.
As for the GPU problem it sounds like drivers issues use stormar quoted advice and see what happens. Does seem like your comp is running very hot though, maybe a clean and reseating of GPU and coolers is in order.

As i said before my cpu is 42c idle, which isn't causing me any concern. I used driver genius to unstiall the drivers, but i'll try again when im home from work. Thanks for all the advice.
