Hardware Issue

Hi All,

Weird first post, but I have been reading the forums for years!

I'm hoping someone can help!

For some strange reason, over the past 4 months, my machine firstly randomly freezes - usually on start up, it's pot luck whether I have to restart my machine up to 4 times within the first 10 minutes of using it.

Sometimes my screen also freezes with loads of different colours on my monitor, and stays like that before I manually restart it.

At the same time all of this is happening, whenever I download anything - from steam, or even through my browser, it locks my machine for 10 seconds, then back to normal for 5, then again for 10 seconds. Very odd.

I have reformatted my machine, and triple checked all the drivers, so I'm now guessing this is going to be a hardware issue? May I ask what you would check first? Memory or the graphics card?

I have not pinpointed the freezes to anything. It's not just when I play games, and I have disabled all my virus/adaware software.

If anyone can please point me in the right direction that would be great.

Cheers

Chainsaw

can you list your pc components/specs

its usually memory related freezing/lock ups at startup and cold booting

Sorry for the lack of info, I'll list as much as I can!

Memory (RAM) 6135 MB (Although showing as 9GB installed?)

Display ATI Radeon HD 5850

CPU Info Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz

Windows Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (64-bit) Service Pack 1 (Build 7601)

Thanks again,

9gb is probably pagefile aswell

what motherboard? gigabyte/asus ect?

look in the bios and select x.m.p for your memory if you have the option,if not then try with dram voltage at 1.55v or 1.66v depends on your memory but it will be printed on the memory stick the correct voltage

then set qpi/vtt or cpu/vtt to 1.315v and see if it still freezes

I changed the motherboard a while ago, to the Alienware 04VWF2. I know it wouldn't be a first choice for most, but it was just lying around, I didn't buy it.

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 9.00 GB
Total Physical Memory 5.99 GB
Available Physical Memory 3.62 GB
Total Virtual Memory 12.0 GB
Available Virtual Memory 8.50 GB
Page File Space 5.99 GB
Page File C:\pagefile.sys

Is the above alright? Is that including the pagefile?

I'll check in the bios settings now.

Thanks for your help

im not sure what its labelled as on that board but it will say something vtt

its for the integrated memory controller inside the cpu, usually you need around 1.3v

I've just had a look in the BIOS Settings and have seen the following:

Frequency / Voltage Control

Memory Speed - 1333Mhz
Current QPI Speed 4.8000 GT/s

GPI Freqency - Auto
Memory Ratio - Auto
CPU Core Ration - 20

Advance DRAM Configuration

Overclock Configuration

Overvoltage Configutation - IOH Voltage 1.10v - VCORE 1.160V

I went into the DRAM config - couldn't see much in there.

Can you please explain what I need to be changing here please?

Many thanks
