Hello,

just wanted to pick your brains about what to do when you order something online but when the courier gives it to you the package is obviously damaged, can you reject the goods and make the courier return it?

Normally I just accept the goods and then contact the supplier for an RMA but then you have to fork out for return postage etc (some suppliers will refund this but not all).

Has anyone 'rejected' a delivery before?

k thanks.

I heard that some people make the supplier arrange a courier to collect the damaged item? that sounds like a good option because it means you don't have to stand in a post-office queue for 30mins!

anyone?

You can reject obviously damaged goods and they will generally be returned to sender.

Most Companies will ask you to sign a form if you refuse delivery. Just write on it that the goods / packaging were broken or damaged... Then phone the supplier asap and explain.

yep you can send it back there and then.
even if the box/case or what ever looks ok,i always put NOT CHECKED
on the guys pad just to cover my self..

Always, always, always sign for any parcel in whatever condition by writing "unchecked" or "u/c" next to it.

I was a manager at a well known company (possible competitor) and any claim by the company that was made where this had not been done was pretty much instantly rejected. Claims against those with a signature and unchecked were always honoured without fail.

Thanks for replies all!

I didn't know about that U/C (or Unchecked) thing when you sign, will have to read up on that.

Anyway I did an RMA online with the vendor and they approved my RMA for collection and they are sending a courier to pickup the damaged goods tomorrow.

Next time I recieve damaged goods I will reject delivery and see what happens

'Unchecked' doesn't seem to hold as much weight as it used to. You need to check the parcel and write 'Damaged' or 'Opened' these days.

I noticed myself that people wrote a lot of the time "unchecked" beside their signature, but then if you read the back of the POD (proof of delivery) it says "conditional signatures are not valid, deliveries MUST be checked on reciept and an exception form must be filled in if damage is discovered."

If push came to shove, I would fancy my chances much more with a conditional signature than without.

At the end of the day, the acceptance of the goods has been made but making the point that they are unchecked will help in any legal action.

It is for example unreasonable to expect a layman to be able to diagnose transit damage to a sophisticated peice of equipment in a time the courier will be prepared to wait for.

I always sign "contents no inspected" just in case. Luckily never had to find out if it helps !

Just for the record the package I had delivered was a graphics card. The vendor had just wrapped it in a plastic envelope and shipped it to me. When the courier handed over the package it was obvious to me that the box had been crushed at one end, the box had lost its form completely!

I've notice vendors have started to not box a boxed item?
