ok since building my system around an i7 920 4 and a half years ago, ive gone through 3 gfx cards and 1/2 motherboards!

ist gfx card gtx 280 "pink screen of death" on cold boot
2nd gfx card 5870 number 1 artifacting
3rd gfx card 5870 number 2 massive grinding sound
1st motherboard p6t deluxe, 1 pcie slot went, causing monitor to shut off and gfx fan to spin up

and now my cpu fan is failing to start on boot, might be my cpu cooler, a simple arctic freezer 7, but lets face it, its probably the cpu header on the sabertooth!

dont particularly want to upgrade right now, the i7 920 is good for at least another year. is this some kind of static degredation over time or someting or am i just unlucky!

Sounds quite unlucky, have you tried another fan in the header to determine? The fan that came with the cooler may have just worn down over time and is now starting to fail.
