I know that software RAID is generally considered better in general but obviously with RAID 1 a controller failure doesn't matter like it does with other levels, so is there any disadvantage to using hardware RAID provided by the motherboard chipset? My main concern is performance, in software RAID 1 with two drives you get double the throughput and half the latency, but I've heard that hardware controllers don't necessarily support this?
