The sub on my 2.1 intermittantly cuts out - I've had the thing open and everything i can see (PCB wiring etc) is fine, the woofer just cuts out at times.

Any sugestions? Don't really want to have to replace as got shipped from US :(

Possibly a thermal shutdown system kicking in, it is hot at the moment and PC speakers tend to skimp on the heatsinks. Try to make sure it's well ventilated. Is it used near its max volume? Is the cutting out crackly, or just instant/fading down quickly? Does moving it around make it crackle at all?

cuts totally out for days then will just start up magically again.

I don't think the heat is an issue, I've checked the PCB and all the wiring - the desktop speaking will not work with the sub power button off. When the sub cuts out its still powered on, except the sub works some of the time and the desktop speakers are fine.

Hmm, must be some kind of fault in the subwoofer amplifier section. I suppose seeing as the PCB looks ok and the wiring too, it must be a fault at a component level. If you have an oscilloscope, DMM and the service manual you could find the problem, but if not things to look for include burnt patches of PCB and tantalum capacitors. Tantalums look like this:

Unless it is surface mounted. They are used for compactness, but are notoriously unreliable. If you can, try to find out if the subwoofer amplifier section is discrete, or uses a "chip amp" design (which is very much simpler but possibly more difficult to find the replacement component for). I know a forum that can help you, but what you can do with it yourself depends on your electronics knowledge really.

yes it has a couple of those I tend to wiggle them to make sure the solder joint is ok. My electronics is medicore at best, I have a solder iron and multimeter that I am not scared of using.....

it is just so annoying when for no reason it stops half way through a game / tune

I cam imagine it would be yeah. What is the model btw, see if I can find a service manual for you (though the creative set my brother had didn't seem to have one). It may list this fault and give some clue as to how to repair it.
