Harrison Ford lands his aircraft on taxiway instead of runway

Be interesting if a Muslim had done this in Trumps America. Cue immediate shutdown of all non-commercial air travel.

2 crashes in 20 years? 1 of which was caused by engine failure + 1 incident of landing in the wrong place. It's hardly that bad, is it?

If you took driving licences off everyone who had 1 at-fault incident every 10 years, how many people would be left on the road?

I was going to say the same. From the article in the OP about the Golf Course incident.

Christian Fry of the Santa Monica Airport Association said it was "an absolutely beautifully executed emergency landing by an unbelievably well-trained pilot".

Film producer Ryan Kavanaugh, who also witnessed the accident from his office, told The Hollywood Reporter: "He literally had five seconds, and 99% of pilots would have turned around to go back to the runway and would have crashed."

I've edited the title to indicate that he actually landed on a Taxiway instead of the runway. Can't blame ATC for this, it's entirely down to Harrison Ford.

Not to be a fanboy, shouldnt there be an incident investigation (as there has been in the past) before delivering a conclusion?

I dont know how you can doubt his skill, have you not seen him listing lazily to the left. Not many captains could pull off a maneuver like that.

I think as long as hes tested regularly then its ok, maybe a eye test might be in order.

My boss was 76 and had an annual retest and physical to fly a helicopter.
States is probably different.

Is it not the same all over the world? IIRC most of the rules are laid out by the FAA and adhered to by other countries (hence why a plane from thirdworldia is allowed to fly to New York, because they know the pilots should be up to scratch and the plane should be serviceable).

I'd like to know where Air Traffic Control were during this. It's their job to assign land slots etc. You would think that they would have guided him in to a safe stretch of tarmac. Apparently not.

Not exactly sure what a "land slot" is but it's definitely not ATCs job to make sure that the pilot knows the difference between a runway and a taxiway.

Really? So Air Traffic Control do not control traffic in your world. Fascinating!

As stated already, they give a landing clearance. The Instrument Approaches aim to get a pilot to within visual range of the runway but unless it's a CATIII ILS Autoland then it's up to the pilot to decide which bit of tarmac to put it down on.

Why is it when someone gets old people start blaming their age on mistakes, maybe he would've made the same mistake when he was 25, maybe not. You should know the reason for the mistake before you flippantly blame the fact he's in his 70's though.
