Has access to very cheap games lessened your gaming enjoyment?

I just think that games aren't as good nowadays. Sure, they look a lot fancier, but I still go back to certain games like the original XCOM game for example.

There are certain modern games that I put a lot of hours into anyway though, like Civ V, but have the Civ games really changed that much since Civ 2 from a gameplay perspective?

I disagree.

I find the UI for the original XCOM to be a bit of a pain in the arse to use to be honest, and I've been playing it on and off since 1994ish.

Much prefer the new one, which i've put 60+ hours in to. I can sit on my sofa using an Xbox controller and still get the XCOM feeling.

Without getting into an argument about XCom, the old version did have a lot more flexbility.

Free Aim.
Customised Loadouts.
Base building.
More units.
Different ammo types.
Etc,etc.

Etc, etc. You may prefer the new version, but apart from graphically, it is not an evolution of the older game. It is in many ways a simplification.

I agree with the OP.

I remember being locked away in my mates room after his dad had given him £40 for us to go get the first mortal kombat on mega drive. The excitement!!

The problem is not the price the problem is there are too many games and they don't make them as well as they used to.
This generation play a game for 1 month then swap to the next new shiny.

I don't think the price has affected my attitude towards them.

There is something about not having a physical copy and putting a CD/DVD in to install it that seems less rewarding though. I mean i love steam, think it's fantastic, but not having a physical copy of something to install seems less rewarding.

The other issue with that is that you start a game downloading and there's no feeling of "right lets play!" it's more a case of "ok i'll leave that downloading and come back to it....." upon which i might forget to for some time, especially when buying multiple games at once (which is the only place price comes in to play as the only time i buy multiple is when they're dirt cheap or in a package)

One key thing is in the past games actually had a 'demo' so you tried before you buy. Now its more showing off gameplay footage and once you bought it your stuck with it! I've had so many games that have let me down wishing I had a demo for it first.

Picked up Bioshock Infinite from GMG for £12, even though i've played it for hour, the graphics on ultra is stunning, gameplay "So far" is excellent.

I can see this cheap game being a very enjoyable game.

I'm jealous, I would love to be able to wipe it from memory to play again!

No. Cheaper games just means I can try a wider range of games that I wouldn't have done otherwise.

I do, however, know where you are coming from. 20 years ago, when I bought a game I *had* to get 'good value' out of it, because I couldn't afford to buy lots of games. So I would generally only buy games I really wanted, and put a lot of hours into them.

So while I think it has affected the way in which I approach gaming, it hasn't lessened my enjoyment.

Not at all, in fact I enjoy gaming more than I ever have.

I picked up Just Cause 2 a while back when it was on offer and started playing it 10 days or so ago and I have already sunk 30+ hours into it.

I think it is a great game!

Digital distribution also paves the way for small games companies to showcase their work and I have recently bought Prison Architect which I think looks fantastic! I strongly recommend check this out if any of you haven’t already.

I totally agree with you. I still try and buy games on disc when I can as you get that nice feeling when it arrives through the post.

I remember the old days when ordering import games for my PS1 & PS2. I got such a buzz when the postman handed it over. Mind you they were £50-£70 each in those days but I played the game to death.

I've always got every game I wanted since a kid since I used to buy and sell a lot, carboots/charity shops to get stuff cheap, sell them on for more/trade for more. Just now I earn I don't have to put in the extra legwork and just buy everything so nothing really changed... Remember raising £800 in like a week as a youth to get a Jap dreamcast, good times.

For me and dunno if off limits? But I enjoy gaming more since paying for it :o

Getting games for free just doesn't feel right!
