As per subject, I was wondering if anyone had applied (or works there). How harsh is the competition, what are the especially looking for. Thinking about applying for one of their software engineer roles.

Looks like quite a fun place to work?

Thanks:)

A friend of mine applied to them and was invited to an 'interview day' or somesuch. He came back saying it was god awful and hates the company. He got the impression that the office looks a good place to work as they kinda expect you to spend most of your waking hours there.

He's far from a bad programmer as he now writes PS3 code for Sony.

Did he say why he thought there where god awful? Was it just a really tricky interview day, I've heard they get you to actually do some coding whilst on an interview - which sounds a tad harsh!

Yeah he was told to implement something whilst someone kept asking him questions whilst he coded, questions such as 'so, how was your holidays' and other inane things to see how you cope. He said that everyone was generally rude and looked down their noses at him.

don't most software engineering jobs have some kind of coding test? I didnt have to do any coding but was presented a print off and asked to answer questions (for a games programming job)

I think the point is that google expect your job to become your life.. might be nice to work there but it'd get tiring if you were there late every night.

Well, if he didnt get the job his opinion of the company might be a little bias.

I have no doubt it is nowhere near as peachy as the exterior appears to look but I would say that the "better" jobs are those who are senior in the company and expecting all the perks as an entry might be a little optimistic!

Probably have to prove yourself pro-actively and if you are happy sitting there coding assigned tasks then you would likely stay in that role doing the mundane stuff.

THis is all just speculation and opinion on my part, but at the end of the day Google cannot be 100% perfect so will share some traits of other like minded business.

i know someone who worked there, they expect you to work around 17 hours a day, and when you do "leave" the office they hope you to sleep on campus so as not to "waste time" commuting.

Basically your not "allowed" to go home in the week.

Looking at the pictures of the Zurich offices it makes me think of Willy Wonka. Or a paedophiles play pen.

Sounds more like the Scientology offices.

Like above I know a few people who have applied or have worked for google and general impression seems to be they have unreasonable expectations and its quite a stressful place to work unless your truly dedicated to the cause.

It's a crap place to work, all the benefits have been removed except for recruiting purposes, they expect you to give too much to the company, the idea of own projects has gone to hell because of politics and you won't get rich.

I don't want to get rich, just enjoy where I work:)
