Hello,

I'm in the middle of applying to do an Access to HE course in September, with a view to go onto uni to study Engineering.

Has anyone here done an Access course? How did you find it? I'm looking to do it full time for 1 year, I've heard its pretty intense...is this true?

Plus, has anyone got any tips for good universities to apply to for Engineering with an Access course?

Many thanks :)

Hello, I guess you're pretty much following my tracks.

I did a Science and Technology Access Course at Exeter College three years ago. I used to it apply to Plymouth University to do Electronic Engineering, where i've just completed my second year.

It's basically A level standard, and certainly not intense. The one I did was three days a week consisting of Maths, Chemistry, Physics, IT, and a bit of Biology.

I enjoyed it, but found it a touch easy. Then again, your mileage will vary wildly depending on prior experience.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

I done one 2 years ago. Found it very easy but left all the work till the last 2 months and had to work my socks off to finish it all off. I felt that the course was a bit too relaxed and a lot of people just left because of a lack of motivation. I enjoyed some of the work tho which involved English, maths and science. I would definitely recommend it to someone looking for a fast track into uni.

Out of interest, what had you studied previous to the course? Why did you take the course?

How did the application process work, did Plymouth accept you straight away onto a Degree course, or did you need to do a year's Foundation Degree first?

Yeah, did an Access to Science with Maths. Biology, Chemistry (A level standard, little of a degree standard on a few topics); Maths - mixture of GCSE, AS level and some A level.

I passed a science foundation course this year at Plymouth uni which enabled me to go on and study any science based degree excluding psychology. It consisted of modules in biology, chemistry, maths and statistics.

I found it pretty easy going, only requiring an overall mark of 50% to pass. I literally only revised for 30 minutes before my exams and got an average mark for each exam of around 66%. So yeah, very easy indeed.

Plymouth university also offer a mathematics foundation course which enables people to go on and study an engineering based degree.

EDIT: I just realised how old this thread is and that the OP is enrolling :D Enjoy!

hi

what about doing the foundation engineering year. this then lets you onto the full Beng mechanical engineering course .

a group of lads of my course did it and have no complaints. made the first year of the 'proper' course pretty easy for them too because its all similar and relevant stuff that they learnt.

I'm also starting an Access course in September, I chose business as I'm looking to go on to study economics.

I've got my timetable through and I have to say, it looks far more interesting that I thought it would be. I've got lessons in economics, accounting, management law and business maths. I can't wait.

Because I've only got GCSE's that are a few years old, I wouldn't have been accepted on to a Foundation course. Hopefully I'll be able to get straight onto a Beng course after the Access, if not Foundation degree :)
