Has anyone ever started up their own business?

In the process of setting up an engineering consultancy service.

We should incorporate the company within the next 2 to 3 weeks. We've been planning for the past 4 months, and have produced a fairly high quality website. We've got a couple of jobs lined up to get us started, so hopefully should go well. We also have the formal backing of a couple of academics within the department, so somewhere to fall back to if things go badly.

i would love to set up my own buisness.

i had thought of setting up a paintball or karting place, but karting is very expensive, but i would love to do it.

i may just look into my own field of work, photography/graphic design.
either go into the games industry or look into making it solo.

i guess we see. what happens, though some things i never know how people make a living from...

gurdas runs a business sending text messages about nightclubs and handing out flyers, he started it whilst he was at uni and it's doing quite well. He'll be along soon :)

Almost, at the beginning I used to send out texts just to get the word out that I was organising events but now it's word of mouth + flyers + website + facebook. As for flyers, I get other people to do that for me but I work mainly on word of mouth and it works well.

As for a general thing about what I do, I - along with others setup and launch regular student nights in central london. The key is getting a good turn out but we don't have any problem with that because of our location and the atmosphere we provide. It's hard to do well because it's so competitive but i'm lucky with my position and "status" at university because if you are popular and have relative influence it becomes a lot easier.

One of my best nights was on the 8th january 2007, the start of the new term, we didn't have our regular night setup due to complications so a temporary night was done at Ruby Blue in leics square and I got so many people to turn up that at 9pm I had a queue going all the way down to Chiquitos (those of you that know leics square) and could have filled the club 3 times over!
