Has anyone opted out of receiving any leaflets or unaddressed promotional material via Royal Mail?

I wonder if anyone in here has done this?

It' NOT the Mail Preference Service, this is a system run by Royal Mail which is supposed to stop all that junk you get through the door, you know, the leaflet from the pizza firm, the giveaway from the local wrinkles club, the thing that tries to get you to go salsa dancing or line dancing, or join the local bridge club.

It's a faff, you have to print the form, fill it in and send it to them (every two years) but I wonder if anyone here has done it and did it work?

After speaking to the Postie and being informed that they are paid to post junk mail I was tempted to write to my local sorting office informing them that I will be returning all their unwanted junk mail at a cost of 0.25p per letter and would they prefer it in bulk (500 letters) or one at a time.

I've been tempted to try and would like to hear if others have been successful or not before doing so myself.

Not seen that but interesting... I don't actually get that much royal mail junk these days so probably won't bother, but if it picks up again I might. When I do get royal mail junk I put 'return to sender' on it and post it next time I go to a post box :p

Yes, I do it every couple of years (send it off when the junk starts coming back) and it works. First time took a couple of emails to and from the complaints department but after that it's been plain sailing. I wish more people would do it tbh.

Edit: Obvs this will only stop non-addressed mail delivered by Royal Fail, it won't stop leaflet drops from third parties.

Tried it a couple of times, if anything we seemed to get more junk mail, so I just burn it with the other combustible rubbish once a week. Not worth the hassle to me of trying to deal with it officially any longer.

Opting out from Royal Mail Door to Door stops all unaddressed items from being delivered by us

That's the important part. The leaflets from pizza shops and other firms who distribute their own leaflets will still continue.

I'm surprised royal mail even offer the option. It's not like the leaflets are divided up per household - so how would the postie know not to do a leaflet drop at the next house.

We have a real bad problem with this living on a long road, and it's mostly 3rd party dropping leaflets through the door. I reckon we easily get a dozen or so a week.

Had been tempted to get one of those signs that says no leaflets please, but I'd imagine the majority of people would ignore it.

I am not a massive eco warrior but these type of things just strike me as massively irresponsible from a environmental perspective. Like most I just bin them but the impact does play on my mind.

I had that on my last front door and it didn't really make any difference (as seen from the Ring doorbell) and the fact that many door droppers first language probably isn't English.

Yup I also think this.

It uses resources to create the letter, energy in transporting it, people's time, for you to throw it away, and even assuming you recycle, the bin lorry uses fuel, then energy to recycle it the other end etc.

So much energy wasted.

Exactly, then that then makes my cynical mind kick in and I start thinking carbon footprint only applies when there is an additional revenue stream or saves a company money :p
