has anyone read the Wheel Of Time books?

Hi all. Just finished this epic series which was thoroughly enjoyed despite it's well known problems.

I didn't quite understand something that happens near the end and can't find any explanation online, can anyone help?

The part where Grady is holding the canyon as he's told by Matt to stay hidden and don't fight if the villagers are attacked which they are and killed.

He's told to open a gateway at dawn to the same village and when he does, the same villagers pour through with members of the band killing the Dreadlords.

How did Matt know this would happen? Grady asks him and he just says he'll tell him another time. I'm guessing I missed something?
Its been a while since i read the books, but from memory

Matt knows that every morning the villagers are resurrected as they always kill each other every night, so hes banking on that.

I gave up on it too. I think the last one I read was book 7 and that feels like decades ago now
I thought the series lost all narrative drive after book 3 or 4, and nothing interesting happened after that
Everything seemed unnecessarily drawn out
Was quite peeved I'd wasted my time

I'm up to Book 11. It's been a massive slog for me. I've enjoyed some of it but a lot is repetition and quite dull. The prequel is one of the worst books I've ever read.

8-11 could have been condensed into one book. Sanderson did as best he could on the last 3 but they still feel very rushed, some plot lines arent finished and some come to a very unsatisfactory conclusion imo.

I finished this a couple of weeks back, its has a very LOTR feel, somebits are very similar indeed but the plot isn't the same, and its a good read all the same. The ending seemed very rushed to me though, didn't see it coming really and it was all over in a few short pages.

Well he did die before finishing the last three books and another author finish them. Maybe thats why? lol

I love the books, even the slow ones from 8 or 9 onwards. Just listened to all the books on audio. Ever better than when I last read them. The did a great job on the audio books. Wasnt sure about the male narrator to begin with but by book 2 was more than happy with him.

Wondered why I couldn't remember the books and realised you've quoted me from 16 years ago.

Can't remember the plot at all now.

It definitely becomes a slog around the middle but the last 3 (or 4?) when Sanderson takes over makes it worth it.

Some parts of the end are rather random though and left with no explanation. It guess it's difficult to round up such a massive story without the user feeling underwhelmed at parts.

I've started the prequel but not sure if I can bothered with it given how it has started.

Funnily enough I picked up the first one earlier this year - finally got round to starting it yesterday. Gave up after 10 pages.

Try again if you stop so soon. There's a reason these books sold in such huge volumes. Yes, book 1 is a homage to LotR. Yes, books 8-11 are slow. But book 4 in particular in the Wayback Machine does an impeccable job of providing an amazing back story that explains so much without being an InfoDump.

I read them as they were coming out, so often had two or three years between books. Doing a re-read was a standard method and the books were discussed to death on UseNet.

Sorry to dredge up an old post but thought it would be more appropriate to post book discussion here rather than the TV thread in case it accidentally spoiled it.

I am just near the end of The Shadow Rising and

The Amyrlin Siuan just got deposed and stilled. I hope Rann can help her. Is this sequence similar to the TV show where Moraine got cut of from Saidar? Rann could help right?

Moraine was only shielded in the TV show - they are 2 different things - stilled/gentled means your connection to saider/saiden has been severed, there's nothing there anymore. Whereas shielded means you can't access it but you can still feel it. The way the tv show had that whole arc was nonsensical.

Forget the TV show, I can definitely say Rand doesnt heal her (or anybody from memory) in the books. The books deal with it better. Moraine was never shielded from the source in the books. Btw she was only shielded and not stilled in the TV show. Because she had been shielded by the male power and she couldnt see the threads, then she thought she had been stilled. Stilling is permanent, shielding isnt. In the past during the Ages of Legend, stilling could be healed but the how had been lost along with very many other powers.

From memory stilling was never able to be healed- pretty certain the forsaken actually comment on this when they learn nyneave (and then others) start to cure it in book 6
