It is an epic implementation of a flexible screen. Looks to me to be the best one - folding phones just had way too many flaws.

I really like the simplicity of the mechanism as well as the fact that if you squeeze it, the motor will kick in to shrink it. It seems very intuitive.

It's definitely the right direction to get bigger screens on phones while still looking very clean. It still has the issue though where you can't use glass on it, so it will easily scratch. And there's also the potential issue of the motors failing meaning you can't expand/shrink it any more.

What if it starts to unexpectedly starts to grow in your pocket....?

Giggady
surely that is a "useful" feature :D

to get around that, maybe have dampened spring mechanism without motorisation so it is all mechanical and then thats one less electronics and control likely to fail. or have that and the motor so it is like a fail safe...

i think this is definitely the right direction of variable form factor phones.

I don't agree that this is the way forward, unless they can make flexible displays more robust.

As the reporter said, there's still a creasing effect and you can also see it yourself in the video in certain angles where the light hits the screen. There's also the issue that flexible screens are too delicate to be exposed on the outer of the phone, Huawei have just announced their next foldable where the folding display is now on the inside of the device. Huawei have also claimed their foldable doesn't have a crease due to the tear drop bend in the display when folded.

There's also other benefits to foldables which is you can utilise the main cameras whilst still having access to a display.

Looks pretty cool. However expanding/folding phones seem to be a solution to a problem that doesnt really exist in my eyes.
Don't disagree, or with kona786's nail on the head comment, but I suspect the problem they are actually trying to solve is selling ever more expensive phones, and getting headlines in the media.
Plus copying strange designs from Sci-Fi films.

You could say that about anything though e.g. nobody knew full screen, touch only mobile phones were the future until Apple released the iPhone. Clearly foldables aren't as revolutionary as that, as they're more of an extension.

Personally I wouldn't see myself moving away from a foldable now. The ability to have a near 8 inch tablet that can fit in your pocket is just great, and I can only see them getting better. Thinner, better screens in terms of durability and no crease.

I don't think they'll ever become more abundant than standard mobile phones but they'll become far more popular as current technology becomes cheaper to produce and Apple release foldable devices.

I mean I'll probably be all over a foldable phone once the screen is as durable as on a regular phone, but who knows how far away we are from that one.

why even have a motor seems like a waste of time

The tech is great, just outside of a few niche cases I dont see myself needing it. :)

Yup, depends on usage case. Larger screens are great for consuming media and productivity, although I would argue the Fold isn't great for the latter due to lack of stylus. You could argue it isn't even great for media as the screen ratio doesn't suit wide screen such as videos but the video real estate available is bigger.

I often find myself dual screening with the Fold, I'll often have the football on TV with YouTube (watching a fan channel) and Firefox open in horizontal split on the phone.

I think it is extremely practical have a varying format phone. Carrying tablet in its true form is not exactly convenient. This form factor brings that into yore pocket.

If this ever hits the market I reckon it will be quite popular, I for one am excited about it and I wasn’t keen on fold ones.

Quite impressive they've got it working to that degree to be fair - though you can see a fair few issues with it.

Definitely something that would be useful for me at work though - quite a lot of times where I'm diving into my phone for stuff and it isn't really optimal trying to manipulate things on the phone but not really worth the time to dig out a tablet/laptop or find a PC, etc.

Owning a fold 2 I won't be able to go back to regular screen. But that is the worst implementation of the foldable screen, it simply has little to no ability to not scratch super easy, hence the fold give a very nice secire feeling.
