Has my card had it?

My old Vaio with its GeForce Go5700 is having some problems, first of all it was stuck at 800x600 in 4-bit mode with all kinds of image corruption. After trying system restore (no help) I uninstalled the drivers and managed to get 1024x768 @ 32 bit, however the screen's resolution is 1280x768 (I'm guessing that the default Windows driver doesn't recognise 16:9 resolutions). Installing the drivers again caused it to revert back to 800x600 @ 4-bit and on other tries it caused BSODs. The operating system is XP SP2, and I know the corruption isn't due to the screen as none of the pixels are stuck or anything like that. I'm guessing there's something wrong with the card itself (memory?), and since it's soldered onto the motherboard I'll have to replace the PC entirely, but before doing that I need a second opinion on this. I've included some photos of the corruption so you guys can judge properly:

Everything else on the PC is working properly. Don't know the cause of the problem since my sister was on it at the time.

That is the cause of your problem :p

Do you get the corruption with the windows drivers?

Before giving up I would be tempted to do a clean fresh install of xp with drivers.

Shame to throw something away which you might be able to fix.

Though at first glance it does look FUBAR.

Yep, there was corruption with the default Windows drivers, though reinstalling the nVidia ones messed things up even more. I'll try a clean install to see if that does anything.

And my sister seems to break any electronic thing she touches, so no surprises there. :p

Yeah, if the boot-up screen is corrupted it certainly isn't a software issue.

So, I'm afraid to say that the memory on your card has died (or at least one of the chips has anyway). If the card is in warranty then return it for RMA. Other than that, I'm afraid it's time to get out the 'ol wallet.

Don't blame your sister by the way, this could have happened at any time, and short of her volt-modding your RAM or physically messing with the card, there's nothing she would have done to expediate the demise of the card.

Thanks for the help guys. mATX time with a 4850 methinks (gonna swap my GTS320 with it haha).

Dr Fartypants: Not really blaming her, its just that she's quite accident prone around computers.:p

It seems to have rectified itself, left it running for about an hour and rebooted it... No more corruption and the nVidia drivers installed flawlessly. So after three hours of booting into safe mode, system restoring and driver fiddling it turns out a little warm up is needed. Go figure... No 4850 for me then. :/

Thanks for all the suggestions though!

that's happened before for me too when my aiw 9800 pro was on it's way out. Seemed to rectify itself then died a week later xD

I'm expecting that to happen eventually, just gotta keep it on life support and back up all the important stuff before it goes to computer heaven and I get a good reason to upgrade my PC haha.

Very strange.

Watch out for it recurring soon though.
