Has my hard drive failed?

I have a HDD taken from a broken pvr, it sees the disk in bios etc but i cant format it and it keeps becoming un - initialised?

curiosity really... could a damaged hdd damage the computer?

Most it would probably do is cause your OS to lockup and lose any unsaved data at the time.
