Does anyone know if my 600W 'Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold' PSU will be safe to use with Haswell chips? There seems to be a bit of a PSU scare relating to Haswell at the moment (it could be overblown though). I've messaged Cooler Master and not yet received a response concerning the matter. My 600W PSU is not a cheap one either and i would like to keep it if i decide Haswell is worth upgrading to.

Any thoughts?

Or he could just turn off the useless power saving functions anyway... because who wants to save power when you're OC'ing...

I prefer to keep power saving features enabled, and I don't really OC anything these days (i don't really feel the need to as my PC seems fast enough already ;)). I don't want the CPU to be running maxed out when i'm just browsing the net or listening to music etc...

It's a decent PSU and received excellent reviews. It was fairly expensive when I bought it less than 2 years ago (it has a 5 year warranty and hasn't been heavily used either).

I get what you mean but the "power saving" options are generally for sleep states making them next to useless. I usually have it set so that when Im doing nothing my CPU clocks down to 1.6Ghz (think thats the intel boost option or w/e it's called) and springs up to 4.4Ghz when I am doing something.

Got a reply from Cooler Master and it appears my PSU is safe :). This is the reply i got in case anyone else needed to know:

Dear Dan,

Thank you for your inquiry.
Yes our power supplies (Silent pro gold 600W ) are most compatible with the new Haswell CPUs, we have not officially announced it yet but you can rest assure that they are compatible.

Kind regards,

Michiel Bos

I'm hoping my Seasonic 650 Gold will work with it, as I only bought it a few weeks ago.

[edit]
It looks like the Seasonic Gold PSU's are compatible

The thought that just occurred to me is, that if you've got a haswell CPU and the PSU doesn't like working at the very low wattage state the Haswell can go down to, possibly adding some case lighting or similar might push the power usage in standby/hibernation up enough to make the PSU happy.

It might not be as good for energy saving, but could be a lot cheaper than having to buy a new PSU, and still save some of the wattage compared to disabling the lowest power state for the CPU.
