 For those who have LGA 2011 motherboards already, however, there comes some bad news: the same unnamed source claims that the new Haswell E chips will require a brand-new chipset dubbed X99, meaning it is unlikely to be compatible with existing X79-based LGA 2011 motherboards.

damn i was thinking i may get an x79 board in a couple of months its hard to plan ahead when haswell and haswell - e facts are thin on the ground

Seeing as how the latest leaked roadmaps have Haswell-E down for a 1H 2015 release it's not something we'll have to worry about for a good while yet.

That was pretty much going to be the case and should have been expected

Ivy-E isn't out for X79 yet.

I expect the successor to Haswell - E to use an entirely different mobo to X99 but now we are so far in the future it is unimportant.

Dont worry mate. Bring what you have to the forum. Its all interesting and sparks discussion no matter what source.

Was haswell-E ever meant to be socket 2011? The whole reason I bought a 3930k in the first place was because it gave me an upgrade to Ivy-E, I don't recall ever seeing anything stating that I could get the generation after on X79.
This is fine by me, can't really expect an intel chipset to last more than 2 gen these days

Considering Haswell needs a new socket, it makes sense to me that Haswell-E would require a new one too.

Besides, the high end platform is trailing behind compared to the mid range platform... considering IB-E is still not released yet...
