Haswell Overclock Thread

I assume the engineer meant for LN cooling, rather than water cooling. Still he should have not said anything.

Pointless for you to upgrade. After delid I would think I could do 4.9GHz, but am happy with 4.7GHz for the minute :D
 
Just finished setting up my 4.7GHz OC to work stable on Adaptive mode. At least now I can be on low voltage and temps majority of the time.

As I am typing this, CPU-Z is reporting 800MHz and 0.848v. The CPU temp is 29C :)

By the way, biggest tip I can give you Haswell users looking to overclock is... Use Handbrake! In my experience that app is the quickest way to see if an overclock is stable or not.

I am using NZXT Kraken X60 which is a all in one closed loop 280mm water cooler. I just leave it on silent mode. There is a small chance I could get a higher stable oc with extreme mode, but my ears won't be to happy about that, nor would my missus for that matter! lol :D

I will post a pic up of my setup in the next few days.
 
I haven't managed to fiddle much with my settings due to a a very annoying issue with lockups, lost icons and odd mouse pointer behaviour. Turns out it was all caused by the latest geforce drivers and was sorted by re-installing an older version while in safe mode.
 
Nice one TNA. My delivery to Spain has been delayed thanks to the French air traffic controllers :( So hopefully see it Tuesday now.

Gutted, was looking forward to building this weekend.
 
Even though it may be disappointing to some about how Haswell clocks there is still only a mere £5-£15 difference in price between the 3770k and 4770k so new builders might as well just go for the newer tech Haswell. If there was a bigger difference then the 3770k might be still be worth it.
 
Jesus!, just done my first video encoding with this Haswell chip, on my old i7 920 Bloomfield a file size approx 80Gb would have taken 1hr 15 to encode, Haswell is reporting 21 minutes now!!!! :eek:

EDIT: Well it would have been quicker if my system didnt just Bluescreened!!!. I have stressed this OC with OCCT on LinPack with 90% memory usage and AVX LinPack Capable for 30 mins, then ran AIDA64 for 3hrs 40mins and it passed it fine!!!. Now after 4 minutes of encoding with RipBot the system crashes!!, the BSOD code is 0x124 according to WhoCrashed program

Yeah, it's a bit quicker than my old Q6600 too, unsurprisingly. And you get the same deal with Handbrake really, it much more easily crashes the system than the artificial tests in AIDA64 and XTU. :)

shaving off that time is a lot.
however as many note, stability with a ondie voltage chip is tricky.
 
Reading through this thread it seems Haswell in general seem to overclock between 4.3-4.5Ghz topping out at the latter before high temps/ volts kick in, with few reaching 4.6Ghz+.

0x124 - going to need a touch more v core voltage - up it one notch and see if that cures it.

You can push that a bit further. Temps under extreme load of around 80-85c is as high as you can go for Haswell, but you'll rarely reach that high under day to day use anyway. The chip can handle it ... it'll only start throttling in the mid to high 90's. Plenty of headroom still at 1.152v.

I think you're right, it's just me being cautious, will try 4.4Ghz with same volts, nudge volts up slightly if needed.

Normal use 4.6ghz no issue with temp, 10 second aida fpu only 100c.........
throttle.....with high end watercooling, silly difference even though normal use I am likely to not even see 70c.
running 4.7ghz 1.26v testing atm and aida havent gone above 70c.
 
i wish intel would release separate CPUs that are more expensive to put an end to the silicon lottery. i would pay a £100 or so more to get one with been cut from the silicon better.

Yeah, I'm running 4.6GHZ, I required 1.3V to require full 100% stability (Pushing the cores to their maximum) 1.25v would have been fine for gaming though.
