Just hit the buy button on intel haswell 4770k.my i7 920 has served me well and I really fancied something new.
I was wondering what kind overclock can you achieve on these new chips?
What is an acceptable overclock?
Is there a real world difference between say 4.0 to 4.8 overclock?
What do people do if they get a poor overclocker?

Thanks zia

Welcome to the silicon lottery. It depends on the chip you get, but you can expect somewhere between 4.2 - 4.6 Ghz, with the average being around 4.4. If you get one that clocks higher then you've done well.

There is a real world difference from 4.0 to 4.8, but whether you'll notice it or not depends on the application / game that you're running. BF3 you probably wont see much difference, perhaps a couple of fps... Arma 3 you should be able to see more of a difference.

If you get a really bad one you can DSR it, or an average one you might decide to keep and delid it.

I moved from an i7 920 to a 4770k and I've been quite pleased with it. Mine sits at 4.4Ghz with low volts and temps and is much faster than the 920 was. It will go higher, but the temps start to go through the roof. I plan to delid mine at some point, but even at 4.4 it has enough performance for it not to be that important for me.

Hmm seems like a good a thread as any to ask in. Is it really worthwhile upgrading from an i7 920 to Haswell?

I've been on the proverbial fence for a while now. Mine feels fine, but it might just be me not knowing any better.

I felt the same. I was unsure before I purchased it, unsure while I was waiting for it to arrive, and unsure even while installing it. But now I have to say yes, the 4770k is a good CPU, noticeably stronger than my i7 920.

The switch between motherboard chip sets is nice as well, from old style BIOS to UEFI, along with SATA2 to SATA3 for your SSD's, etc. I went with a Gigabyte OC, but there are plenty of good ones on the market now.

My i7 920 lasted me for 4 years was clocked at 4.0 even managed 4.2gz stable on air.but wasn't worth keeping at that speed due to temps and power consumption.
Beside encoding nothing really pushed it to be honest.had intend to go ivybridge-E but when i saw the reviews come out i was very disappointed.
More than anything i think am looking forward to having proper sata 3 and full dts sound as use i my av receiver to output to 5.1.when watching blu rays etc

I went from an i7 860 to a Haswell 4770k.

Wasn't really planning on overclocking it, but then I played Assassins Creed III which is so CPU bound because it only seems to utilise 2 cores. With full graphics at 1080p there is an area of the game that suffers a bit of slowdown (Boston) so I took it to 4.5Ghz and that seemed to solve the issue I had in the game.

So yes, it's a great upgrade so far as I am concerned and PCI Express 3.0, USB 3.0 and SATA III are small bonuses as well.
