Pretty much how I thought it'd go,The Wii has firmly shaken nintendo from the sleepy old grandad of console producers to something approaching the smart teen in designer clothes that the PS1 initially was perceived to be ( minus the hardcore techno edge ps1 had at the time )
Nintendo have ms and sony backed into a corner, price is everything ! nintendo have been making profit on each unit sold, and the same cannot be said for ms and sony, imagine how much it has cost ms in returns and repairs alone. I think sony dropped the ball by going blu ray, whilst it offers great value in comparison to stand alone players there isn't the market for it yet. personally I'm more than happy with dvd quality ( I'm a child of the 70's and recall vhs being hailed as a marvel but nobody worried about the dodgy quality back then ) dvd does everything I need and i have no desire to switch formats. When blu ray / hd dvd takes off and becomes a mass consumer item the £100 bracket I'll buy into it.
I've owned a Wii for 4 months now and can honestly say it's probably played around 4 times a week. I don't want a console that demands I play it 24/7 I want something fun I can dip into as and when my life permits it. something I can share with friends and family. I do like both the PS3 and 360 but for the cash layout I would not get the same return in pleasure. The worrying thought for both sony and ms is this, if Nintendo can produce and sell this many units and make a clear profit what's going to happen in say 2-3 months time ? imagine the Wii being given a price drop around 10th Dec to hmm £149 for the same bundle that's costing £179 now
Nintendo can afford to do this and they have as history show's been prepared to offer decent price cut's in order to boost sales ( N64 dropped 6 weeks after lauch afaik ) If they did who would care to predict xmas sales of the Wii in comparison to the other 2 players.
I'm betting ninty will drop the price just before of just after xmas this will be followed by a huge increase in sales. MS and Sony are huge and could drop the price of the consoles but there's the question of perceived value. both of them have aimed for the high end gamer and image matters, a 360 or PS3 say's I love games and I'm prepared to pay for the best. drop the price low enough to hit the mass market and the image of the console is slighted.
