Have got 2 36Gb Raptors

Hi,

I have got 2 36Gb Raptors. These are the old ones - the 8MB cache ones.

I am sick of their noise. As my I strive to get my PC more quiet the horrid sound of those raptors is becoming extremely irritating.

From what I have read, in modern terms, these drives are not really considered to be very fast anymore - despite their 10K spin speed.

I have an nforce4 mobo with onboard sata controller which IIRC supports up to 300Mb/sec transfer rates - is that SATAII ?

I am looking to replace both drives with one SATA drive. It does not need to be big as I have a 500Gb NAS. Anything about 36Gb is fine for me.

I was hoping someone could spec me a good, solid, fast (ideally faster than what I am used to with the raptors, SATA drive that I can buy from oc.

Ive got hold of a 74Gb Raptor today and i must admit its far louder than either the maxor and the samsung in the same system.

You SATA2 is 300mb/s

For a replacement have a look at one of the 250Gig drives with 16mb cache. Out of my drives id say the samsung was the quiestest

Downloads on WD's website can be put onto floppy and booted from. This will basically boot to a "Mini HDD BIOS" and let you control the drives acoustic management.

Without NCQ surely performance will be reduced if he makes it quieter?

True - but he's wanting to reduce noise. This can be balanced with minimal loss to performance.

Lots of people complain about the noise of these drives, which I've never understood.

Nobody ever complained a Ferrari was noisy. If you want the speed, it comes with noise

Interesting, I have two WD in my HTPC. Will that just reduce the clicking noise?

IIRC the WD 36GB 8MB 10k RPM didnt come with NCQ or TCQ for that matter. Having two 8mb raptors myself, it was the 74GB that featured TCQ and the newer 36GB which had NCQ added.
