Tim - I didn't know that the pin was bent - otherwise I wouldn't have put the heatsink on.

I am tempted by the 3800 x 2 OEM on this week only.
 
Are you sure that it is not the 'new' heatsink bracket that you fitted causing your overheating.....is it EXACTLY the same size for instance.....seems strange that the cpu works fine in another board.

I removed the heatsink and the processor was stuck to it, I don't know if the Artic Silver 5 has gone off but it had gone really thick.

One of the pins has come off from the center of the CPU - I found it on the socket - it is intact but I don't know how this will affect performance or how I could reattach it. :(

jeez that sounds like a nightmare, and it isn't the first time I heard about this sorta thing. I am still running on a stash of AS3 I have from years ago (bought a few extra) but now I am thinking I will give AS5 a miss, never damaged a cpu in my life and not in a rush to either.

Can this risk be minimised by running the CPU at full load prior to HSF removal?
 
Bito - cpu is in the same mobo so the bracket must be OK, I was going to take it off tonight to fit my watercooling but the Y connector for my antartica block is missing :(

The retailer will probably not open another kit to send me one so I'll have to RMA it all :(
