Have I damaged my CPU?

Hello,

Something weird happened to me. I'd been running my CPU with a fairly decent overclock for about 6-8 months, then last week I returned it to stock speed and voltage as I wasn't playing many games and didn't need the overclock any more.

However, I found that the system is no longer stable at default voltage (frequent blue screens of death) and now seems to need slightly more volts to just be stable even at stock speed.

Just wondered if this sounds abnormal and if I may have caused some lasting damage to my CPU or motherboard?

Thanks for any replies.

Depends on the voltage but if its sufficiently high enough you could simply be a victim of mild electromigration.

Not important but can anyone give a few more details on this (just curious really). For want of a better way to put it im guessing that it just "gets used" to running with the higher voltage and then cant run at stock.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've now returned my system to the overclock. I thought that if I was running a higher voltage anyway I might as well run the CPU at the higher speed.

I'd heard about electromigration and guess that this may well be the case, maybe the CPU has just "got used" to being run at a higher voltage.

Cheers

its something called electron tunneling i think.

nothing major dont worry about it

Isn't "electron tunnelling" the quantum notion that an electron with a defined amount of energy could pass a higher energy value, due to the wavefunction saying there is a possibility of the electron suddenly having enough energy to overcome the previously impassable energy level?

Either way, get the overclock back on :D

If its not running at stock speed at stock volts then it should be a warranty claim and a new one on its way as long as you fail to mention overclocking. I had a cpu fail after phone line hit by lightening. Was replaced straight away and never even asked about overclocking (although it wasnt overclocked anyway)

If it's not working at default volts anymore, then you've probably damaged it from too high a voltage. Continuing to use it at that voltage probably isn't going to do it much good for much longer...

Err yeah sure! Someone else on here mentioned it to do with this problem, they must have been wrong
