Have I enough Cooling?

Hi

Im replacing my Mobo,CPU and RAM next week once Ive seen the prices for the IB's tomorrow.

Im also replacing my Graphics.

Therefore I will be stripping out all of this stuff from my current set up and using whatever is left, including the case.

I was wondering If I had enough cooling currently if I anticipate overclocking this new system.

Im new to all this so I dont know what cooling I have other than this info:-

Its a large Antec Case. Looks very similar to the Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gamer Case
It has:-
2 Fans on the front face that say Antec 3 speed.

I also have a fan at the top which sits next to the CPU heatsink

I then have another at the back which looks like it blows across the heatsinks.

I also have 1 inside my 850W Coolermaster PSU.

If Im thinking of overclocking the GPU and CPU (not massively), will this set up be sufficient?

Possibly an Antec 902?

Airflow should be sufficient by the sounds of it for your new setup, the big gains and losses with be decided on what CPU cooler you choose.

By the sound of it IB's pricing is going to start out around 1:1 with sandy pricing and then rise ;)

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I think I bought this from OC about 3 years ago so it will be a variant of the 902, looks like the same cooling system albeit that fan on the top looks bigger on the 902. Mine is flush inside the case and not oversized like the 902.

What do you mean by CPU Cooler?

PS Im looking at replacing the Q6600 CPU with an I5 2500K or the IB equivalent.

I mean which heatsink/fan will you be using on the 2500K/3750K? If its just the stock cooler that comes with the chip you're going to have next to no headroom for overclocking.

Here is a pic of the case with Q6600 Heatsink

The i5 2500K has one like this in the retail box:

On the 2500K this is okay for 4-4.2Ghz ish, but for more than that you want something a bit better, e.g.http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-086-AK&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

EDIT: just seen your post :p
Not sure which one that is, for it to fit the i5 you need it to have 1155/1156 socket fittings - if its a bit old its unlikely to have these.
Do you have the invoice for the original order? It would say what you ordered :)

So that retail one you've shown me in the pic would be a substitute for the fan I currently have positioned left in the photo?

I think that fan on the left says Antec 3 Speed (there are 2 more at the front of the case also)

If you buy a retail CPU it will come with that heat sink which would go on top of the CPU like the massive black/metal one in the middle of the picture. If you want to overclock it to ~4.5ghz, you don't need to change the fans in your case you just need to either use that large heatsink you've got [if it'll fit 1155/1156 sockets] or buy a new one like I linked above :)

I bought this a few years ago so no paperwork. Think I got it from OC.

Anyway the mobo is dead so im happy to replace it now.
Ive never bought components before so im a bit clueless to be honest.

If I buy the new mobo and say the 2500K, will that processor come with a heatsink (like my Q6600) and also a new side fan (like mine on the left) ?
If it does, you are saying I may have to sack off the retail fan and get a better one (like quoted above) in order to overclock.
Looking at the heatsink I currently have and the overclocking fan I would need, there doesnt seem much room to fit them all in??

See my post just above, which answers some of those questions.

To be clear, the heatsink that comes with the CPU [or a bigger one if you buy one] will replace the large one you currently have. So there will be room :)

so i get the retail CPU which replaces my big heatsink. I then buy a "better" fan/heatsink combo that you linked and replace my fan on the left with this new fan/heatsink combo??

Is there enough room??

Firstly, so we get this right. How much do you plan on overclocking? e.g. to 4Ghz or 4.5Ghz or higher?

You do not need to change/replace the fans on your case. We'll leave those as they are. All you'll need to change is the large heatsink. You EITHER use the reail one which comes with the CPU OR you buy a bigger one which goes where your big one is now.

Probably 4Ghz

PS I just looked at a youtube unboxing of the i5 to understand what you were on about.
So that fan/heatsink you linked REPLACES my big heatsink??
If thats so, my heatsink I have is MASSIVE!!! :D

You can do 4Ghz on the small heatsink which comes with the CPU :)

Yes it would be instead of. You might be able to use the big one you have, but without know which model it is I can't tell you if it would fit [the newer CPU/motherboard will come with holes in different places to your current one]

well thanks very much for your help, much appreciated :D

I may as well get the one you suggested for the price just in case I want to OC more. Im gonna go with a Z77 board with either i5 of IB tomorrow.

Now I just have to read up HOW to overclock hahaha!!! (Plenty of info on here to read up on!

No problem :)

Hopefully one of the more experience members here might be able to identify it for you. Would be good if you could re use it! I recognise it, but can't for the life of me remember which it is!

I know you have a massive heat sink already, but they vary a fair bit - so if you're gunna buy the one I've recommended, check it fits first. It's 160mm tall, so measure from your motherboard to the edge of the case to check it fits :)

The cooler in the picture is a Tuniq Tower 120 (i have the same one cooling my Q6600) it won't fit SB/IB CPU/Boards as standard as it was out well before they ever existed. Whether they sell the newer fixings for it I don't know

A corsair A50 is a great cooler and will be fine for your new kit, it's good for a 4.6ghz oc on a SB but not sure how well it would perform on the new ivy although I'm sure it would be more than adequate for small oc and would certainly cope with 4.0ghz.
The fan on the rear of your case is an exhaust fan and does not need to be changed.
Do you have a budget for the cooler?
